01 / CONTROL
Control at the speed of the load.
The medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply (UPS) uses local block control. The UPS block controller takes 4,800 samples per second, decides in under 1 ms, with a 3 ms total response from measurement through command to the converter. On the dual-conversion path, transfer time is 0 ms because the load never leaves the inverter.
Every block runs local control and keeps serving load if the energy management system (EMS), the core network or the wide area network (WAN) is lost. Battalion EMS coordinates dispatch with a supervisory loop that runs once per second. Each UPS block maintains local control of its load.
02 / AVAILABILITY
Availability is a design basis, evaluated for each site.
The availability model targets five nines (99.999 %) at the system level with N+1 block failover, one spare block beyond the load requirement. The model is evaluated per site and covers the UPS hardware, auxiliary and control power, site integration and the operating model.
Each block runs local control. A loss of the energy management system (EMS), the core network or the wide-area network does not interrupt the load.
03 / OPERATING HISTORY
An operating fleet across three markets.
The founders have built energy management systems and operated batteries in front of the meter, behind the meter and in microgrids since 2016. The operating fleet runs in ERCOT, CAISO and Mexico. The platform covers eight North American markets, and the EMS is deployed in three countries. These describe operating locations, market coverage and deployment footprint respectively.
The founders earlier built a behind-the-meter modeling platform for storage project economics. The chief technology officer (CTO) authored OpenDNP3, an open-source utility protocol implementation. The same team writes the protocol stack the controller speaks.
