SOLUTIONS / MICROGRIDS AND CRITICAL POWER

Microgrids and critical power.

An island must balance its own generation and load when the grid is unavailable. Batteries, solar and generators have different limits and response times. A reserve that exists in a spreadsheet also has to be available when the connection is lost.

01 / CONTROL

One controller for the grid and the island.

Battalion EMS coordinates storage, solar and generation. A grid-forming power conversion system (PCS) sets voltage and frequency for the island. Battery state of charge (SOC) measures the energy available, and the required backup reserve remains a control constraint.

Grid forming, islanding and black start are capabilities of the architecture. Black start establishes an energized bus from a de-energized system. The site design defines separation, load pickup, generator coordination and reconnection.

02 / INTEGRATION

Local control carries the critical load.

Every sub-block and block runs autonomously if the central energy management system (EMS), core network or wide-area network (WAN) is lost. Paired controllers and auxiliary power from two sources support that autonomy.

Engineering and integration covers the control panels, distribution interfaces and commissioning sequence. Battalion Live brings operating state and event history into one view.

03 / OPERATIONS

A reserve sized for the island.

The operator gains a defined critical-load sequence and an energy reserve sized to the outage duty. While connected, the battery can manage demand and participate in eligible programs within that reserve constraint.

Reserve reduces the energy available for other services. The study accounts for this cost, fuel use and battery degradation. Without coordinated reserve and load pickup, an island can run out of energy or lose stability before the outage ends.
