SOLUTIONS / COINCIDENT-PEAK PROGRAMS
Coincident-peak programs.
A few system-peak intervals can set a facility’s transmission or capacity charges for the following year. Those intervals are uncertain. A battery needs enough power, energy and advance notice to reduce the load the meter records.
01 / PROGRAMS
4CP, 5CP and 12CP change the required duty.
Four coincident peaks (4CP), five coincident peaks (5CP) and twelve coincident peaks (12CP) allocate costs using a facility’s demand during selected system peaks. The tariff and program rules determine the interval and calculation.
| Program concept | Peak basis | Sizing focus |
|---|---|---|
| ERCOT 4CP | Four summer monthly system peaks, measured in 15-minute intervals | Forecast lead time, discharge power and ramp energy |
| 5CP | Five selected system peaks under the applicable program | Coverage of candidate peak hours and recovery between events |
| 12CP | Twelve monthly system peaks under the applicable tariff | Year-round duty, including winter load patterns |
Energence compares the structures on the same load profile. A study identifies the tariff and program version used.
02 / CONTROL
Forecast the peak. Dispatch within the ramp limit.
Battalion EMS schedules discharge against candidate peak intervals while holding the backup reserve. The ramp limit at the point of interconnection (POI) sets how early a reduction must begin. Recharge is subject to the same limit.
The model compares battery sizes and duration against forecast uncertainty, energy used during ramps and battery degradation. Meter records support the review after the program publishes its peaks.
03 / OPERATIONS
Peak management with the energy cost included.
The operator gains a battery size and dispatch strategy tied to the program’s actual duty. Scenario analysis shows how a different peak structure changes the decision.
A missed peak can leave the facility carrying charges for a later billing period. Excess duration ties up capital, while too little energy can prevent a complete response. The study exposes both costs without assuming that every forecast is correct.
