A battery-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) at medium voltage answers that: it feeds the critical process through its own converter, with 0 ms transfer, so the line keeps running through an outage or a sag.

What the public record says

Mexico’s central bank asked manufacturers with more than 100 workers whether their regular electricity supply had been interrupted in the previous 12 months. The peak-to-peak change in a site’s active power, filtered to keep everything from 0.1 Hz to 55 Hz, may not exceed 10 MW in any rolling 5-second window. ERCOT presented the proposal to its Large Load Working Group in February, April and June 2026 and said it would file the revision request in the second quarter of 2026. As of October 5, 2026 no revision request carrying the limit appears in ERCOT’s list of pending requests, so the limit is a proposal and its final wording can still change.

Why data centers must now ride through grid faults

On July 22, 2026, at 7:56 in the morning, a 230 kV transmission line in Northern Virginia faulted. The protection cleared it as designed. Within about a minute, approximately 3,800 MW of data center load had moved off the grid and onto backup power, the largest load transfer PJM has recorded. PJM had seen similar events in the same area in July 2024 and February 2025, and this one was about twice as large.

Why your AI data center needs a battery

An AI data center presents two power problems at once. Graphics processing unit (GPU) and tensor processing unit (TPU) clusters can swing tens of percent of facility load in under a second, every 20 seconds or so, thousands of times a day. The grid sees those changes at the connection. The compute equipment also depends on continuity of supply. A voltage sag that trips rack power supplies forces training to restart from its last checkpoint.

Careers in energy systems.

THE PLATFORM

What you would be building on.

The platform is written in Rust and runs on real-time Linux at the site, where it controls batteries, power conversion systems, metering, protection relays, and microgrid controllers, and where it increasingly sits between the data center and the power system that feeds it. The architecture is modular: new capabilities are added as plugins and applications on a stable core, so the same platform serves a grid-scale battery, a critical-power microgrid, and an AI data center. It ships with an integrated user interface and connects to Battalion Live, which runs on AWS and handles telemetry, monitoring, and remote operations. Together they replace the SCADA and PLC control stack a conventional site would run, and they do more than that stack can: site control, power plant control, market dispatch, and monitoring in one system.

JOIN THE TEAM

Contact Battalion Energy.

01 / PROJECTS

Engineering review.

Energy storage, medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply (UPS), site controls and integration.
